Pigeons
Pigeons in the attic or on the roof? Those pesky rock doves leaving droppings all over are common pigeons. Pigeons are notorious for causing significant damage to buildings, vehicles, property and machinery with their excessive droppings. Not only do pigeon droppings cause odor and aesthetic problems in public places, droppings can also increase the rate of building destruction.

Description

Pigeons have been around humans for more than 5 decades! And as we have changed, so have these birds. Some pigeons have been domesticated; however, most of them have evolved to live off of the habits of humans. That is why you see so many of them in big cities where the trash is plentiful! Pigeons are considered the most popular avian pest. Critter Control of Boulder is here to help!

Habitat

Having originated in Europe, North Africa and India, pigeons were brought to North America as a domestic bird species in the 1600s, and now hold a wide distribution throughout the continent. Pigeons are most reliant upon human activity for food and shelter, this is why they are so common in big cities! They build their nests from sticks, twigs, and grasses in complex architectural features including lofts, steeples, attics, caves, warehouses, bridges, etc.

Entry

Are pigeons known to enter homes or yards?
Pigeons are well known for orienting themselves around consistent human activity. These birds commonly nest near humans. Pigeons prefer to eat grains, seeds, garbage, livestock manure, insects, and just about anything people will feed them! Damage

Do pigeons harm people or property?
Pigeons are quite filthy animals, and as such, they produce a health risk to humans. These birds' droppings are abundant wherever they make their nest, and can stain buildings, park benches, statues and cars. In addition to being aesthetically displeasing, these droppings can also deteriorate building materials! Furthermore, pigeons' excrement contains pathogens of numerous diseases, including ornithosis, encephalitis, toxoplasmosis, and food poisoning. The birds can also harbor fleas, lice, mites, and ticks in their feathers and consume and contaminate stores of food meant for human and livestock consumption.

Control and Safety

Because pigeons are drawn to nest where food is abundant, pigeon control must center on eliminating their food sources! To prevent pigeons from entering parks, feeding should be strictly regulated. Sealing trash bins, removing collections of debris, and trimming trees and shrubs will also protect against these pests. Additionally, there are many products that help prevent pigeons from nesting on structures including mesh netting and bird spikes.

Pigeons spread numerous diseases, and as such, individuals are safer to not approach them. In areas where pigeon infestations threaten the general public's health, pest control professionals should be brought in to handle the problem!
